SCALES & WATCHES & WARNINGS, OH MY: Judging Severe Weather

Enhanced Fujita Scale

Tetsuya Theodore “Ted” Fujita

Meteorologists classify tornadoes based on the damage they cause using the Enhanced Fujita Scale, created by Japanese scientist Dr. Tetsuya Theodore Fujita at the University of Chicago in the 1950s. Considered to be the top tornado scientist in the world during his lifetime, Dr. Fujita’s studies lead to countless discoveries about tornadoes and the weather.

STORM TEAM 12 is always watching for severe weather, and so are the meteorologists at the National Weather Service (NWS) and the Storm Prediction Center (SPC).

The NWS and SPC send the watches and warnings you see on the bottom of your TV screen or on your phones during severe weather.

Watches and warnings should be taken seriously. They let us know conditions are ripe for storms that could damage or destroy homes… or maybe even threaten lives!
